Excerpt from the private papers of an unknown Penny Dreadful editor - October 2014
With a creak of the door, the messenger limped in.
“This comes straight from the judge.”
I knew this was coming, though I had dreamed otherwise. With a nearby knife, I opened the envelope. Trembling fingers pulled out the yellowish page. It was from our judge, spooky author and previous winner Laura Jane Cassidy. Out of a blind list of 167 entries to the Penny Dreadful One Line Horror Competition, she had selected a winner and 9 runners up.
The runners up are as follows…
Her memories were the most beautiful thing about her, which is why I saved her temporal lobe for last. - @EmmaPaulet
‘Who’s gutless now?’ he whispered, his wife’s entrails draped over his arm like a waiter’s cloth. - @STurner4077
When she invited me for dinner with her family I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in. So was she. The oven was a bit small. - @Emmaleene1
She crawls into my bed for warmth and comfort, tiny fingers seeking mine. Below, my cellmate weeps. He has a visitor of his own - @Karl_A_Russell
Singing along to the radio, it took her a few lines to realise. Hers was not the only voice in the car. - @_Marie45
The party balloons were tied to a post in the graveyard, next door. - @leenacia
‘I used to be a werewolf’, said the large hairy-faced man, ‘but I’m alright nooooowwwww’ - @michileenog
For Sale: Baby Shoes, NEVER TAKEN OFF. RUNNING BABY DEFIES CAPTURE. SEEMINGLY SHAPELESS. UNSTOPPABLE IN THESE ENCHANTED BROGUES - @BaconPancakes69
Beware the night of All Hallows’ Eve. For the clouds will fall, the dead will rise and the devil will see wherever you hide. - @tashawhittaker
And the winner is…
The abnormal mass shivers, swells under my skin. The doctor pokes it & smiles, ‘Soon we will be able to remove you from the tumour.’ -@emreapy
I shudder and quickly fill a scare package to be sent to Elizabeth Reapy containing the 6.66 euro cash prize, an issue of the Penny Dreadful, a personal illustration of her tweet and our congratulations. Thank you to our judge, Laura Jane Cassidy and everyone who entered. Have a Dreadful Halloween and drive safely!
